Basel took a quick train ride to our German neighbours for a much-needed pre-season friendly. After two months on half a pitch of astroturf the team needed a chance to stretch their legs and get some hits in.

The game kicked off pretty much as expected. Both teams were a little rusty from the winter break but Basel looked more likely to break the opposition line, with some encouraging interplay on the backs.

This attacking desire paid off with full back Jan Hossli scoring after about 10 minutes.
Unfortunately, bad luck would snuff out any momentum as centre Jose Suarez got his studs stuck in the turf during a tackle. With an ambulance on its way the game was put on hold. (Good luck Joey, you’ll be back)

As the game continued, the boys seemed creatively superior to Freiburg, but unable to make it count when it came to points. Freiburg kept their heads up and equalised.

With half time over, Basel stopped waiting for things to happen and worked to get some turnovers and keep possesion better. This allowed for further tries by captain Daniel Zinsstag, Todd McDonald & a second for Jan Hossli.

Though Basel looked to be edging ahead, this was far from a rollover. Freiburg managed to break the line a couple of times and scored once more.

This may not have been champagne rugby but a decent first outing to blow away the cobwebs and see the team in action. Also good to get debuts for new boys Alex Bolland and Dominic Haffter.
